At $12,877 with only One week to go.

With just one week to go to the Thanks Giving weekend, the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital have raised $12,877; $5044 in cheques and $7830 donated on the internet site.

We are so lucky to have such a fine hospital with dedicated and compassionate staff that take care of our community from beginning to end; from the beginning in the maternity ward to the end in palliative care and all of our ailments in between.

This is the community's opportunity to say thank you in a tangible way. You are part of that community! Your donation, large or small, will help the hospital serve the community better, serve you better.

Let's keep the donations coming so we can reach our goal of $34,691 by October 7th.

Durand Manor furniture upgrade.

Last year, close to $20,000 was raised by the Friends of the Golden and District Hospital. Priority items purchased with last year’s funding included artwork and furniture for Durand Manor.

“Furniture in Durand is huge,” Jo Evison, GDH Manager explains. Durand is home to 26 residents, she explains, and last year’s funding helped replace the “hodgepodge” of furniture that was there previously. “It didn’t look homey,” she says, adding that the new furniture benefits the residents and their visiting families. “It’s as much about making it a pleasant environment for families as it is for residents.”

One of the great things about the Giving Thanks to the Golden and District Hospital Fund is that the money is raised by the community for the community.  Giving Thanks to Golden and District Hospital is a fundraising campaign that requires the support of the entire community and all our friends. When we work together as a community, we can achieve great things and help our hospital continue the important work they do.

A new washing machine and Kitchen station were also bought last year.

“We are very lucky,” Jo says. “A lot of equipment has been purchased. It’s been great.”

Funds raised by the Giving Thanks to the Golden and District Hospital fundraiser help not only to serve patients, but also to make the GDH and Durand Manor a welcoming place for all who visit.

“It’s nice to have the extras and more comfortable items for people to use when they come here,” Jo explains, adding, “It becomes important when you have to come to the hospital and use it.”

The money raised by the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital stays in Golden.

Columbia Valley Credit Union supports the Friends of the GDH..

.. by contributing $2000 to the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital 2017 fundraiser. The Columbia Valley Credit Union made their contribution by cheque so the donation does not show on the internet crowd-funding campaign.

For people who which to support the hospital and contribute to the campaign, but do not want to donate over the internet, the Friends of the Golden & District can accept cheques made out to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health, Friends of the GDH. A call for donations from New and Expectant Parents

Jo Evison, Manager of the Golden & District Hospital, explains there are two rooms in the maternity wing in the hospital and only one room provides the birth partner of the expecting Mom with a place to sleep. A sleeper chair in the second room is needed to provide partners with a comfortable place to sleep during prolonged labour and after the baby arrives.

“I think the idea of a spouse bed is a good idea,” says one expecting Mother who recently took the prenatal class at GDH and had a tour of the delivery and labour room in the maternity wing. She said the class was helpful as she awaits the arrival of her baby in December.

The sleeper chair costs $2,885. Over the last year the maternity ward served about 70 women and their birth partners. If those new parents and the parents expecting next year each donated $50 there would be more than enough to buy a sleeper chair for the second maternity room.

If you think birthing partners need a comfortable place to sleep during prolonged labour, donate $50 to help buy the new equipment for the maternity ward. Indicate if you are a new parent or expecting parent in the comment box so that we can gauge the interest in a new sleeper chair.

The Giving Thanks to the Golden and District Hospital Fundraiser kicked off its third annual campaign last week. The fundraiser, hosted by Friends of the Golden and District Hospital (FGDH) is raising money for a special wish list created by hospital staff for the GDH and Durand Manor.  Jo Evison, GDH Manager, says the wish list is made up of various items under $5,000 that help improve services and comfort to patients. Priority items this year include a sleeper chair, infant scale and a training DVD for prenatal classes the maternity ward.

Equipment in action

I went down to the hospital to talk to the staff and see some of the equipment, paid for by the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital fundraisers, in action.

A vital signs monitor. You will be happy to learn my heart is still beating. If you have ever been in hospital you would know how vital these monitors are.

A fetal heart rate monitor for the maternity ward. I'm not pregnant! This allows nurses to monitor the baby's heart rate critical for the well being of both mother and fetus.

An exercise machine for Durand Manor. Located in the new room that was recently added. The Friends also funded the kitchen unit for the new room. There were a dozen seniors enjoying coffee in the room when we went in.

Furniture for Durand Manor. A comfy place for resident and visitors to sit and chat.

A warming tray. Small pieces of equipment that make a big difference to the quality of the care that the hospital can provide.

A new washing machine for Durand Manor makes life much easier fort he staff to provide a clean and safe environment for the residents.
