What are you Thankful for?

As the Thanksgiving weekend draws closer, you should take time to reflect on the things that you are most thankful for. That list almost always starts with family, friends, and loved ones. High on my list, I am thankful to have relatively good health.

I am extremely thankful that Golden is fortunate enough to have the Golden & District Hospital and Durand Manor complete with compassionate and caring doctors and staff. What better way to thank those folk than to join the Friends of the Golden and District hospital and donate a gift to buy equipment that helps them help us.

The size of the gift, $50 or $500, is less important than the message it sends; "Thank you".

Dr. Virginia Clark; "We really need this machine!"

"There are many occasions where we have individuals who are in crisis in our trauma bay and cannot safely be moved to the x-ray department to get needed images of the chest, spine, neck or lab fractures.  Having this portable x-ray machine that comes to the patient when the patient cannot come to the x-ray can help us provide timely care in a safer fashion.  This new machine can provide better imaging for interpretation and is sorely needed." Dr. Virginia Clark.

With 5 days to go before the Thanksgiving holiday, the donations for the 2019 fundraiser, the fifth annual "Giving Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital" fundraiser, total $7,180.

This is your opportunity to show how much you support the doctors and staff at our small rural hospital and Durand Manor. Small donations can make a huge difference to the services that can be provided by our hospital.

Donating to the FGDH is tax effective.

Some charities charge a large administration fee reducing the amount available to the cause however, Canada Helps only takes a small administration fee of 3% and transfers the funds to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH) where it is segregated into an account specifically for the Friends of the Golden and District Hospital. The EKFH takes about 5% as an administration fee when equipment is purchased, so for every Dollar donated approximately 92 cents is available to the hospital for the purchase of equipment. A Very efficient way of raising funds for our hospital!

When you donate to the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital, Canada Helps will issue to you a charitable donation tax receipt for the full amount of the donation. The tax receipt will be emailed to you automatically. You can also print the tax receipt directly from the donation page. Your tax credit will vary depending on your level of donation. A Very efficient way for you to give to charity!

Are you due for a colonoscopy?

If you had a colonoscopy at the Golden Hospital in 2019 or are due to have one you may well benefit from the most recent equipment acquisition funded by the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital.

Before Golden had this equipment, discovering polyps during a colonoscopy would mean a trip to Cranbrook or Kelowna for surgery to have them removed. Now polyps can be removed here in Golden with the VIO 300D.

"This equipment allows us to remove larger polyps safely right here at the Golden Hospital. It has been used during 10-12 colonoscopies in the last month and with the arrival of an additional surgeon in September it will see even more use as the number of procedures we do increases. Removing the polyps in the pre-cancer stage greatly reduces the incidence of colon cancer."

The VIO 300D is a premium electrosurgical generator for interventional endoscopy cost $33,999 and was purchased in 2019 with funds from the 2018 Thanksgiving fund raising campaign and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

Mobile X-ray System

Friends of the Golden & District Hospital are raising funds in 2019 for  ;

A Digital Radiographic Mobile X-ray System.

"The mobile x-ray machine will help physicians rapidly diagnose emergent conditions in the emergency department and the hospital ward.  We commonly use the x-ray machine to help us diagnose orthopedic injuries and respiratory conditions such as pelvic fractures, hemothorax and pneumonia.  It's vital equipment during a trauma or critical care patient." Dr. Adam Watchorn.

On behalf of nursing administration, thank you Keith for your ongoing support towards raising funds for much needed equipment throughout the Hospital and other program areas within our facility. 

Your enthusiasm and dedication has allowed us to purchase equipment that would have otherwise been delayed, possibly years, while awaiting funding approval.  These funds directly benefit our community and patients.
