Remember to give Thanks today

Now the Thanksgiving weekend is here, you should take time to reflect on the things that you are most thankful for. That list almost always starts with family, friends, and loved ones. High on my list, I am thankful to have relatively good health.

I am very thankful that I live in a caring community where neighbours help neighbours and Friends support Friends. A community that cares for it's newborns and it's senior and everyone in between.

I am extremely thankful that Golden is fortunate enough to have the Golden & District Hospital and Durand Manor complete with compassionate and caring doctors and staff. What better way to thank those folk than to join the Friends of the Golden and District hospital and donate a gift to buy equipment that helps them help us.

The size of the gift, $50 or $1,000, is less important than the message it sends; "Thank you, we care".

This is the last day the online fundraising page, Giving Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital 2023, is accepting donations.

Procrastinate no longer! Give Thanks today.

New milestone; $250,000

Last night the Friends of the Golden & District hospital surpassed a significant milestone.

$250,000!

The Friends of the Golden & District Hospital raised over $50,000 from an online fundraising event in 2015 in memory of my wife and best friend, Frances and other families in Golden who had experienced loss of a loved one.

There are many families that want to express thanks to our local hospital for one reason or another and this fundraiser allows them to do so in a tangible way and to show community support for the dedicated staff.

All of the funds raised are used to purchase equipment for our local hospital over and above their annual budget. These items truly make a big difference and have a huge impact on the scope and quality of the services provided by our small rural hospital.

Giving Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital, the fundraising initiative which began in 2015, has become an annual event. This is the 9th annual event. Since the initial fundraiser in 2015, the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital have raised over $250,000.

The online fundraising page, Giving Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital 2023, is accepting donations until Saturday October 7th 2023.You can donate online by clicking the link below or, if you would prefer to donate by cheque, call or email me and I will arrange to have the cheque picked up.

Jim and Lisa Carlson are truely grateful.

Two years ago Jim suffer a heart attack and, thanks to intervention by the staff at our local hospital, survived the ordeal. Jim and Lisa have expressed their gratitude with a donation of $1000 to the Giving Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital fundraiser.

There are so many reasons to Give Thanks to the Golden & District Hospital and the dedicated staff for the help they give to our loved ones and our community. The Friends of the Golden & District Hospital and this fundraiser were created to allow people to give thanks in a tangible manner.

Friends of the Golden and District Hospital was established in 2015 when a group of families wanted to show their support for the local hospital in a tangible way. Each family had their own story to tell and reasons for giving thanks to the Golden and District Hospital. The crowd funding project, Giving Thanks to the Golden & District hospital, is a very popular event with the community showing overwhelming support for the hospital. This is the ninth annual Thanksgiving crowd-funding event.

Friends of Golden and District Hospital is a group of volunteers that wish to provide important funding for the Golden and District Hospital and Durand Manor. These are important assets in the community that has saved the lives of many of our loved ones. It is also a place that has provided comfort and compassion in the situations where lives can no longer be saved.

Do you need a Colonoscopy?

This year I had a colonoscopy at the Golden Hospital. I was the beneficiary of the equipment purchased by the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital in 2018.

The young female surgeon inquired " Have you had this procedure before." To which I replied "Yes, but more to the point have you every done one before."

Before she could answer the anesthesiologist put me to sleep. When I awoke, I discovered she had removed a couple of polyps.

Before Golden had this equipment (2019), discovering polyps during a colonoscopy would mean a trip to Cranbrook or Kelowna for surgery to have them removed. Now polyps can be removed here in Golden with the VIO 300D.

"This equipment allows us to remove larger polyps safely right here at the Golden Hospital. It has been used during 10-12 colonoscopies in the last month and with the arrival of an additional surgeon in September it will see even more use as the number of procedures we do increases. Removing the polyps in the pre-cancer stage greatly reduces the incidence of colon cancer."
Dr. JG DesCoteaux.

The VIO 300D is a premium electrosurgical generator for interventional endoscopy cost $33,999 and was purchased in 2019 with funds from the 2018 Thanksgiving fund raising campaign and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

If you need a colonoscopy, you will be happy our hospital can perform the procedure right here in Golden.

Donations to the Friends of the GDH are tax efficient

When you donate to the Friends of the Golden & District Hospital, Canada Helps will issue to you a charitable donation tax receipt for the full amount of the donation. You can print the tax receipt directly from the donation page or retrieved at a later date. The tax receipt can also be emailed to you.

Some charities charge a large administration fee reducing the amount available to the cause however, Canada Helps only takes a small administration fee of 3% and transfers the funds to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH) where it is segregated into an account specifically for the Friends of the Golden and District Hospital. The EKFH takes about 5% as an administration fee when equipment is purchased, so for every dollar donated approximately 92 cents is available to the hospital for the purchase of equipment. A very efficient way for you to support our community hospital!

Your tax credit will vary depending on your level of donation. For a resident of BC:
For a donation of $1000, the tax credit is approximately $389.72
For a donation of $500 , the tax credit is approximately $171.22
For a donation of $200 , the tax credit is approximately $40.12
The tax credit reduces your tax payable.

Ole Eskelund-Hansen

"I first met Ole at Lake Louise 30 years ago when are children were in the Nancy Greene ski program and have been friends ever since. Ole and his family bought a place at Kicking Horse which became his home-hill. I shall miss his constant smile." Keith W Hern

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ole Hansen, husband, father, friend and mentor on July 14th, 2023. He leaves behind his wife Alex of 47 years, daughters Tanya (Garrett) and Ellyse (Mark), brother Jens (Christine) of Ottawa, sister Grethe and many nieces and nephews.

Ole was born in Gessing, Denmark in 1946 and at the age of five moved with his family to Canada, where his father continued his farming tradition. They settled in the Belleville area of Ontario. His Danish roots never left him, especially during Christmas when we all had to endure his love of Acqavit and pickled herring!

At the age of nineteen, Ole lost his leg in a tragic car accident on his way skiing. While in the hospital, Ole heard that an Austrian skier had mastered skiing on one leg and from that day his passion for the sport never waivered. While hitch hiking out west during his university days, Ole discovered the mountains – as the saying goes “the mountains are calling…” When a position became available for State Farm Insurance, he headed west to Calgary. There was one hitch, while skiing at Blue Mountain in Ontario, he met the love of his life Alex. Seems he caught her eye with his ‘John Denver’ good looks. She soon followed and after a two month courtship, they were engaged and married within the year.

Ole started his insurance adjusting career with State Farm, eventually starting his own adjusting firm with Don Bauer, and later with Glenn Labelle. Ole gained the respect of his peers through his knowledge, honesty and integrity. His annual golf tournaments were legendary, especially his off colored jokes and sense of humor.

Ole’s greatest love was for his girls, Tanya and Ellyse in whom he instilled his passion for skiing and the mountains. He became somewhat of a legend at Lake Louise, not only as an inspiration to young skiers but to a group of twenty somethings known as ‘Jack’s Gang’. He was given the name ‘the stick man’ which endured to this day, along with the deep friendships and bonds that were created on the ski hill in the 80’s and 90’s.

Ole loved to travel with his family on countless trips to Whistler, Europe and particularly to Palm Springs’s where he honed his amazing golfing skills. His favorite place however was on top of the world above the clouds at Kicking Horse with his girls, anticipating the next run down.

He continued biking, golfing, walking and still did fifty sit ups every morning! He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable man!

Ole and Alex were perennial supporters of the Friend of the Golden & District Hospital
